If you have been living under a rock the past month or so you would not know about the eclipse we are having today. Just as a reminder our schools will be releasing 30 minutes later than normal so expect delays in buses and car riders today.

Our main concern is traffic and we are asking motorists to please be aware of your surroundings. Please don't stop in any roadway to watch the eclipse and certainly don't try to stare at the eclipse while driving. If you do that we will be responding to your accident. Telling us you were watching the eclipse will not be a good excuse as to why you slammed into another car or ran into the ditch.

As a final PSA don't be that guy who thinks this is a hoax and you won't be blinded by the rays of the eclipse. Who are we to argue with science. Get some approved glasses and enjoy this event. Be safe out there.

***OPEN RANGE DAY***

A reminder that the Barrow County Sheriff's Office range will be open this Saturday August 5th, 2017 weather permitting.

There will be a $10.00 charge per person to shoot. The monies collected are used to replace targets and upgrade our range. The Sheriff's Office will have instructors on sight to assist and make sure everyone stays safe while shooting.

We ask that the public bring their own firearms and ammunition to shoot. We will shoot pistols from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Rifles will be shot from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. We want our young people to learn how to safely shoot so anyone under the age of 18 needs to be accompanied by an adult to shoot so families are welcome.

The range is located at 1059 Briscoe Mill Road Bethlehem GA 30620. We hope to have a large crowd so come and enjoy the day with others who like to shoot and fellowship.

Yes we realize our Summer break was way to short. We know our vacations and days by the pool were shorter than we like but the new school year is upon us. Our School Resource Officers or SRO's for short are excited for the students, faculty, and families to start this year off right. We have a great partnership with each school regarding your childrens safety and well being.

We do have one request for our public. Traffic has always been an issue for every school. First rule is to be PATIENT with us and others. We know the first day is exicting for many reasons so please be aware of your surroundings. The safety of your children, faculty, and you is paramount to us. For many reasons it takes about two weeks for us to get traffic running smoothly at every school so again PATIENCE is the key.

We hope everyone has a great first day and school year.

On July 11, 2017, members of the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office, Walton County Sheriff’s Office, and the Winder Police Department conducted several area searches for a suspect who was wanted in connection with several entering autos and the theft of a motor vehicle in both Walton and Barrow Counties. During the early morning hours, deputies with the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office responded to several entering autos off Elijah Way and Rebekah Drive.

The victims reported missing cell phones, credit cards, wallets, and handguns. Walton County deputies were able to get behind the suspect vehicle which led to the suspects fleeing and stealing another vehicle. That chase led them to Barrow County where the vehicle crashed at Highway 316 and McCarty Road.

The suspect, Laqerius Shumpert, ran from deputies and was apprehended around 1600 hours after an intense search by deputies and K-9. Mr. Shumpert was interviewed by Barrow County Criminal Investigators and confessed to committing the entering autos. Walton County Sheriff’s Office processed the vehicle and was able to recover a majority of the stolen property from Barrow County.

The suspects, Laqerius Shumpert and Brandon Bundrage, were charged with entering auto, criminal trespass, damage to property, theft by taking, financial transaction card theft, obstruction of officers, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
