The Sheriff's Office had a great turnout last night for our local churches. Church staff from area churches were informed how to be proactive and protect themselves and their members.

Our goal is to educate our citizens so in the event they are faced with an active shooter the situation can be stopped or more lives can be saved by trained citizens along with law enforcment.

Thanks to the church leaders that attended. Thank you as well to First Baptist Church of Winder for hosting the training as well.

SCAM ALERT

We have received several calls about another group of people trying to scam our citizens again.

They are calling from several different numbers with the caller ID sometimes showing Barrow County Sheriff's Office and stating the person needs to pay a fine for missing court or jury duty. They go on the say if you don't pay a warrant will be issued or you will have to come to the jail and be booked in. They even go so far to say they are Sheriff Jud Smith to some callers who question them.

Please understand these people are lazy and would not know work if it laid in their lap. Also please know that the Sheriff's Office will not call you for any payment for anything. We also don't let anyone know thay are wanted by phone.

If you or anyone you know gets a call like this you can simply hang up.

Alright in a few hours ghosts, goblins, clowns(Not Cool), and all sorts of characters will be roaming our neighborhoods. Please be mindful of this and aware of your surroundings.

We will have alot of deputies riding through our busy neighborhoods until later tonight. We will also have Probation and other Deputies checking our sex offender locations as well.
We want everyone to have fun and be safe. As a general suggestion the fun starts around 6:00 and ends around 9:00 for most houses.

Oh and remind the kids they owe you the Parent Tax of Reese's Cups, Milk Duds, and Snickers for taking them out tonight.

Please avoid traveling on Highway 53 just south of Highway 316. A large trash truck has dumped trash onto the roadway causing the road to be shut down. If you have to travel in that direction then please expect to be diverted onto Perkins road or Bethlehem road. The roadway will be closed for an unknown period of time while the debris is cleaned up. Thank you. ... See MoreSee Less

The Sheriff’s Office would like our children and parents to be safe and cautious during the upcoming Halloween evening on Tuesday, October 31, 2017. Sheriff Smith would like to remind our citizens and kids that dressing as a cute or evil clown is NOT funny at all.

1. Costumes and outfits should not touch the ground to reduce the risk of falls, contact with wires, candles, lanterns, etc.

2. Costumes and masks should allow for plenty of visibility for wearers for added safety.

3. Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Younger children should always be accompanied by adult and older children should always walk in groups and/or with a trusted adult.

4. Make sure children know their home phone number and address in case of separation.

5. Trick-or-Treat only in familiar neighborhoods with well-lit streets. Carry a flashlight.

6. Only go to homes that are decorated or giving out treats.

7. Never enter the home of a stranger.

8. Never accept rides from strangers.

9. Pay attention to traffic, even in subdivisions. Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you.

10. Always walk and don't run from house to house.

11. Walk on sidewalks and driveways; do not cut through yards.

12. Check candy before allowing children to eat. Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them.

13. Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats made by strangers.

14. Help watch out for others.

15. Report any suspicious persons, activity, or pranks by calling 911 immediately.
